Anne-Marie review: An Unhealthy Amount of Surprises and Catchy Tunes
Anne-Marie’s “Unhealthy” tour wrapped up at the O2 Arena on November 29th — starting in Amsterdam, ending in London, and packed with devoted fans, awesome stage setups and even a proposal.
Navigating the bustling Jubilee station, encountering enthusiastic fans wearing pink cowboy hats and capturing moments with their phones. The air was charged with excitement as I approached the O2 Arena, North Greenwich, where lengthy queues of people eagerly awaited entry. Conversations filled the space, creating an atmosphere of anticipation and enthusiasm.
Leah Kate, the opening act, brought an American flair to the stage with catchy pop-rock anthems like ’10 Things I Hate About You’, ‘I Forgot’, ‘911’, ‘Space’ and ‘Super Over’. Her catchy tunes had the audience jamming along, and her joy on stage was infectious. The guitarist accompanying her added to the vibrant atmosphere with his energetic and enjoyable presence, making the opening act a delightful prelude to the main event.
In a dramatic moment, the arena went dark. Cheers erupted as the spotlight shone on Anne-Marie. In case any of the crowd needed waking up, she opened the show with the well-known ‘Alarm,’ unleashing a sonic tsunami that echoed through the venue.
Anne-Marie’s performance featured a diverse setlist, from empowering anthems like ‘SAD B!TCH’ to energetic hits like ‘TRAINWRECK’ and playful tunes such as ‘CUCKOO.’ She showcased her versatility with ‘Birthday’ and ‘Perfect to Me’ and had the audience singing along to favourites like ‘2002’ and ‘Rockabye.’ The setlist covered a range of emotions, keeping the energy high with ‘FRIENDS’ and ‘KILLS ME TO LOVE YOU,’ and concluding with the intense ‘Psycho’.
A magical moment unfolded on the tour’s grand finale as one of the dancers received a surprise proposal on stage. Anne-Marie was happy to join in with the celebration. After the joyous moment, ‘2002’ took the spotlight, with the crowd singing at the top of all their lungs (on the day they fell in love).
‘UNHEALTHY’ by Anne-Marie, a catchy country-pop song, explores toxic relationships with parallels to cigarettes and hangovers. The title track is addictive, instantly capturing people’s attention on this album. The audience swayed their hats in rhythm, and Anne-Marie, joined by dancers, added an energetic touch to the performance, making it a memorable part of the show.
The pinnacle of the night belonged to the performance of ‘Rockabye.’ Anne-Marie was, visibly delighted and surprised by the audience’s harmonious rendition, saying, “Now I know how you feel; we could just switch places. That was very good.” Her voice remained a mirror image of the studio version, and the interaction with fans was a standout moment. Anne-Marie playfully hushed the audience for a few suspenseful seconds before the pre-chorus. What started as a playful, light-hearted moment quickly transformed into a lively engagement, with the entire audience enthusiastically joining in.
In a nutshell, the concert was fantastic. Great setlist, impressive dancers, and amazing crowd engagement. Anne-Marie’s performance was fantastic and deserving of a big round of applause. A truly unforgettable night.
